Personal seeding grant: Academic Excellence in Ukraine begins with you

We are glad to announce our small personal seeding grant ‘Academic Excellence in Ukraine begins with you’, specifically tailored for those who, due to the state of war or personal circumstances, cannot leave Ukraine but strive to advance their academic careers from within its borders and contribute to a modern academic community in Ukraine. Grants are disbursed as part of the German-Ukrainian project “Learnopolis+”, which is financed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funding from the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

 

What do we offer?

With a monthly grant of €200 for four months (01.08.24 to 30.11.24), we aim to give the necessary financial support to focus on substantial scholarly work such as developing new courses, writing an article, or crafting research proposals. Depending on your aims, we help you find a mentorship from the University of Bayreuth or another German University.

 

Who can apply?

Researchers, who stand for perseverance, commitment and ambition:

  • Affiliated with one of the participating Ukrainian universities
    • Ivan Franko National University of Lviv
    • Vasyl Stus Donetsk National University
    • Ternopil National Pedagogical University
  • Proficient in English or German for academic communication
  • Under the age of 40 and in the early stages of their research career
  • Internally displaced persons, veterans, or individuals in difficult social situations will be given special consideration
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence will strengthen your application

The project steering board will select twelve promising researchers – four from each university.

 

What do we expect from you?

  • Use the four months to create either a teaching, research or capacity-building-orientated output. The results can be in Ukrainian, German or English.
    • First month: Setting up your working agenda
    • Second and third month: Working on your project and finding a cooperation partner in Germany (on demand) 
    • Fourths month: public presentation of your work on our website 
  • The formal requirements to receive the personal grant
    • EUR-banking account to receive tranches of each 400 EUR.
    • Apply for a German tax ID with our assistance. This is a legal requirement to do bank transfers to people not connected to the University of Bayreuth. You are not required to pay taxes in Germany, unless you are a tax resident of Germany.

How to Apply?

  • A concise CV highlighting your academic journey (e.g. Europass)
  • An overview of your intended research or teaching project
  • A personal statement, especially if you belong to the prioritized groups (internally displaced persons, veterans, or those in socially difficult conditions)

The deadline for applications is July 14th, 2024 (23:59 Kyiv time).
